A cold front is moving in, but that is no excuse for not updating. I think mostly I have become busier doing things and that leaves less time to write. Roomie and I have been busy at Higglety Pigglety Farm, sawing and splitting piƱon, using the Nunu to make small leaf particles from cottonwood and elm leaves, and distributing cubic yards of compost around the flowerbeds and trees. There remains much work to be done.
We are also engaged in negotiations to expand our landholdings. We have a willing seller, but there are a few questions we need to have answered first, and of course there is the matter of the price. As the drizzling rain arrives, the prospect of having a large tin-roofed space to store all the contraptions (lawn tractor, Nunu, pickup, car, etc) is increasingly tempting. Less tempting is the idea of acquiring a house for whom the most likely tenant would be my father. Not that I don't love the guy, and he has certainly made my life easier, but Roomie and I have become very habituated to each other in the absence of daily contact with other family members.
Other concerns about the New Old Place relate to security. Although there is a barbed-wire fence in front of the tin shop, our present house is fairly remote from the front gate. Moreover, the house is not fenced in, though that might be remedied. Roomie and I are on the task of what may prove to be the most daunting rehabilitation project of our career as fixer-uppers. Just thinking about it now (before we have so much as made a formal offer for the place) exhausts me.
On the other hand, we have had the ownership of income property as a financial goal for several years. Building equity on two places will decrease the time it takes to afford another house. Did I mention that the owners of the house on the other side of us are relatively old and frail. Perhaps in a few years time, we will be able to afford it as well.
