No sooner do I post about my apparent victory in the comment spam war than do I start receiving comment spam again. Fortunately, zero spams got through the SpamLookup filter, and all spams have been forwarded to Jay Allen's Comment Spam Clearinghouse as well as my own personal "blacklist."
Comment spams are interesting because unlike regular email they do not seek to attract my attention nor the attention of my peeps (both of them). Instead, they aim to establish a higher Google search engine ranking by appearing on the indexable HTML pages that MT creates. Fortunately, my email client (Apple's Mail) does a pretty good job catching the email junk. However, I do have posts to my blog forwarded to my email account, so when I have a dozen new emails in my inbox, I am pretty sure of a comment spam attack.

I have not had a single spam comment forwarded to me for approval since I began using the De-Spam Comments feature of MT-Blacklist. SpamLookup catches so many comment spams that I can no longer count them. Estimating by the number of spam comments per screenfull, SpamLookup is now catching about 140 spam comments each day.
In other news, I created this yesterday. Drop me a line if you are interesting in participating in the affirmation project.

One of the nice features of MT-Blacklist is that you can "de-spam" comments and trackbacks in batches. When I get comment spam, I check the box next to them and then press the "de-spam comments" button at the bottom. It forwards the suspect comments to the owner of the Blacklist, and he reviews them for spam content. This feature of MT-Blacklist works even if the plugin is disabled for incoming comments. Mad props to Jay Allen for this plug in!
Since I have been submitting spam, I have noticed a drop off in spam activity; I suspect that the spammers will return with another barrage but I think I have the tools to keep them at bay for a while.

In the ongoing battle against comment-spam, I have enlisted a new ally: MT-Moderate. MT-Moderate allows comments on recent postings (the past week or so) and older postings for which a comment was allowed in the past day.
This means that if you want to comment on an older post, it will be moderated (ie sent to me first for approval). Since most commenters comment on the new stuff, the installation of MT-Moderate should affect only the spammers.
