Cursing the Previous Owner

I knew that I was purchasing the F650 from a person with little mechanical skills, at least when it came to motorcycles. The big tip-off was that the fork seals had been leaking for some time and that oil dripping down from the forks was the cause of the front brakes' inability to stop the motorcycle. Perhaps it was my having replaced or had replaced the fork seals on two Ducati's and a Benelli in the space of several months, but I noticed the problem right off the bat.

The incompetence of the PO was brought to my attention today. For the past week Since riding the bike up to Taos, I had noticed that the battery was having a hard time turning over the engine. This occurred only when the bike was cold and it was cold outside. Today, having the day off for Veterans' Day, I took the opportunity to examine the battery off the bike. Several of the cells were completely dry! The PO had not bothered to ever top off or examine his battery in the several years that he had the bike. A new battery is on order, just in case the newly topped off wet cell does not hold a charge.

No wonder the battery needed a good charging whenever I pulled in and put it on the Tender.
