It really is not such a big deal. Just an overnight road trip. But the roads! Two weeks ago, Roomie and I started to go to the same places in separate vehicles (she with dog in Biscuits and Gravy, I on the 851), but the 70% chance of rain and most especially the darkening storm clouds to the north of Albuquerque forced me to chicken out and join her in the station wagon. It did not rain a drop.
This weekend, or more accurately, tomorrow, we shall try again. The route is/was stupendous: NM 4 to Pojoaque, through the Nambé Pueblo, up to Chimayó, past Sipapu Ski Park and on to Mora. From Mora, there is a road north to Angel Fire (which we did not take two weeks ago) reputed to be one of the finest in the state. From Angel Fire, we shall drop into Taos and spend the night. On Sunday, the plan is to take the northern route out of Taos through Tres Piedras over the 9,000 foot pass to Tierra Amarilla and then head south through Abiquiu. At Lake Abiquiu, I will head west on Hwy 96 to Cuba, and from there south to US 550.
Hopefully some color will remain in the aspens and the cottonwoods along the way.
