The Perfect Martini

There was once upon a time a webpage that extolled the virtues of the perfect martini. I recommended the essay to Jenny Miller. Since the website has disappeared, I will paraphrase. What I can recall of the page are the following:

  • "A martini garnished with an olive is a pastiche, like putting a lawn jockey in front of Fallingwater." A real martini is garnished with a lemon twist that has been quickly wiped around the rim of a frozen glass.
  • "Some people will tell you that a perfectly decent martini can be made with Boodles or Tanqueray. These people are wrong." The best martini is made with Bombay Sapphire.
  • "Some people may claim that a martini may be made with vodka. This is also wrong. A martini can only be made with gin. A vodka-vermouth concoction is called a vodka and vermouth."
  • All I could find tonight is this and this. I hope it serves the purpose of keeping the martini bloodline pure.
