Let's Hear It For Office Co-Worker Birthdays

I have been blessed and cursed with what Roomie and I term "a criminal mind." Every once in a while though it comes in handy. Yesterday, I was hungry around lunchtime, but I was getting pretty tired of the standard fare downstairs. It was grey, cold and kind of damp outside and I had little inclination to go out into the elements for food.

My boss had been complaining about the fact that the power had been off for four hours that morning, and that his prepackaged lasagna portion had been sitting in a pool of freezer-thaw sweat for some fraction of that time. While recounting his dilemma (I was certain that some of the 600 ingredients listed on the package would insure that the food would be edible if a little mushy), I offered "But doesn't Chipotle sound good?" He paused for a moment, and gazed unfocusedly out the window. The bait had been presented. Since he is at heart a good boy from North Dakota, he responded

—I was thinking that since it was A—'s birthday, I could ask whether the office workers would like Chipotle for lunch and offer to spring for A—.

—Great idea!

He called upstairs to see if they had already eaten or ordered. They had not. The hook was set: He could hardly ask if they had ordered and then refuse to go and retrieve lunch. The next thing I knew, he was putting on his overcoat and asking me for my order. He did not appear pleased, and he wondered aloud just how he got roped into doing this. I wrote my order down on a Post-It™ note and handed it up to him, a feeling mixed of guilt and criminal pleasure entering and tainting my soul.

Next time, I'll go. I promise.
